[ Ange starts, exasperated, and then stops herself for a moment. Like she needs to gather her thoughts enough to form them into one cohesive question before she speaks on. ]
Do you really think rich people have butlers just for cake?
[There's a long pause as the gears start grinding in Ruby's head. She doesn't want her girlfriend to think that she's a total dummy by getting this one wrong.
Yeah. My grandfather is on a different level entirely.
[ There's no words in existence to even describe Kinzo, let's be real. ]
I mean, he's my aunt's father, you know? She learned how to be that awful from somewhere. My grandfather was awful to all of his kids, so they all turned out.. [ Ange pauses. Her dad is among them, after all, and though he is an Awful Man in some ways, she doesn't exactly want to badmouth him either..
It's hard. And nuanced. ]
Well. They all struggle with bad traits of their own because of it.
[Ruby pauses after hearing that. Honestly that tracked with her own family and the family of friends that she knew. Her family had been irrovercibly strained when Yang's mom had left. She knew this wasn't the same as that but she couldn't help but think of Weiss' family in this case.]
That sounds absolutely awful.
[There aren't any words to really say beyond that but she does catch Ange's pause and she knows where she's going with that and the slippery slope it could lead down.]
Yeah... But I mean even if there's bad I'm sure there's plenty of good in them too.
.. well.. [ She's a little quiet, but then continues. ] I guess there's got to be something good about me if you're here with me.
[ Even if it might be hard to necessarily see herself through the same view as Ruby has of her. But she means it. Ange knows something about her must be worthwhile at this point, if it's making Ruby stick around with her. ]
And I'm trying hard to be better than my family was in some ways.
[ Because it's not like they were all entirely bad.
It's just that there was a lot of bad going around. And while that was something she could put in the past before, it's a little harder now there's someone from her world here. It all makes it come back into focus. ]
[She let's Ange's words sit briefly before she responds. She knows Ange doesn't particularly view herself the highest after what she's been through and Ruby wasn't a huge fan of that. But she knew pushing it wasn't exactly something she could just do either. It was complicated and something Ange would have to sort out over time. With some help.]
I guess. But I think there's a lot more good than there is bad. But I wouldn't take one or the either. They're what makes you you. And I wouldn't change who you are or a second.
[Even if she's going to have to learn how to deal with a more extroverted Ange soon but that would be it's own battle to figure out.]
I get that-
Honestly- I'm sure they'd be super proud who you are. And who you'll become.
I think they'll need to reserve that judgement until I figure this entire mess out.
[ At least that doesn't sound very self-depricating in nature, because Ange wouldn't want to do that right after Ruby gave her such a sweet answer. It's more just that this in general is a mess. Someone showing up from back home, way after Ange ever gave up on the idea of that happening. ]
[Ruby can kind of relate to this. From the times she had run into Pyrrha, Clover and now Penny have shown up here. She's always had a hard time figuring out how to deal with friends who weren't alive back in her own world. She could only imagine how Ange might be struggling with it considering how long it's been since she's seen any of them.]
That's okay. Sometimes things like this kind of catch us by surprise.
But... I'm here for you, you know?
We'll figure this out together. Just like we always do.
[ There's a brief pause.. but then Ange breathes out a breath she didn't realise she was holding. ]
.. yeah.
[ Ruby is right. And it's a good reminder, especially at a moment like this. It's so easy to forget that she doesn't have to figure things out by herself anymore. Even if Ruby might not understand a lot of the more delicate aspects of having someone from her world around.. the other will still help and support her, and Ange knows it. ]
Though we might have to make some sort of contingency plan if this is something that's going to happen more than once. [ Because now there's the chance of anyone coming out of that ocean. ]
[Ruby knew at the very least there were a few people from Ange's world that would be a lot of trouble if they made an appearance here. Her aunt, her grandfather, the witches. She could definitely understand why Ange might be wary that more could show up at this point. One of them showing up and hurting Ange was the very last thing she was going to let happen.]
Of course. Why don't we meet up and we can jot down some notes. Get an idea of who and what to watch out for and what we can do just in case.
[ It's really something, isn't it. The way she can feel so nervous at any given moment, and then suddenly feel entirely comforted the next, just because of some simple thing Ruby says or suggests.
Like right now. The anxiety of feeling unsure about how to deal with any of this fades a little, replaced by a much warmer feeling inside of her chest. ]
Thanks, Ruby. That.. actually sounds great, right about now.
[ Maybe she just needs some future contingency planning and girlfriend handholding to feel better. ]
voice;
Was she like your cake butler or something?
Because if she was then that is something we could use around here…

Eventually she speaks up.]
...Yes?

Thank you for your honesty.
[ Only Ange could deliver that line in such a dry, deadpan tone. ]
.. but, no. She was a maid over at my grandfather's place. And my grandfather was the worst.

Your welcome.
[It flies over her head just what she's saying that for but it's just Ruby. There is a bit more of a pause here as she considers that.]
Oh okay. That makes sense- Wait. Wait. Wait. I thought your Aunt was the worst? Are you trying to tell me there's more?

You're pretty wonderful. You know that, right?

Hey. It's the least I can do.
See you then.
